About the Angelus

The Angelus is a prayer which commemorates the Annunciation of Our Lord by the Angel Gabriel to Mary. The Angel visited Mary to tell her that she would give birth to the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

Praying the Angelus

The Angelus is traditionally prayed three times a day – at 6.00am, 12.00 noon and 6.00pm. The prayer consists of a series of verses and responses, interspersed with Hail Marys.

You can download the text for the prayer and join in with the recordings on this page.

Aid to the Church in Need staff in the 17 countries where we have national offices gather together at midday to pray the noon Angelus.

We hope you will join us at this time, as well as following your own observances at the morning and evening prayers. We ask Our Lord to remember persecuted and suffering Christians around the world, as well as offering the intentions of friends, family and benefactors of Aid to the Church in Need.
