Emma: Daring to hope and dream in Sudan

Emma* met staff from Aid to the Church in Need on a project assessment trip to a Save the Saveable school outside Khartoum.

The 14-year-old was taking a break during revision for an exam the following day.

“This school is my only hope of fulfilling my dream of becoming a doctor,” she explained.

She also stressed the importance of the school’s religious education programme.

Bishop Daniel Adwok, who coordinates the schools programme, explained: “The schools of Save the Saveable are the only ones in northern Sudan where Catechism lessons are given in class.

“Government schools where many Christian children also study do not allow the teaching of the Christian religion in their schools.”

The Save the Saveable programme has 200 teachers dedicated to religious education.

But aid agencies are reluctant to back the scheme because of its commitment to teaching Christianity.

Aid to the Church in Need is providing vital help for Save the Saveable schools

Aid to the Church in Need has responded to a special request from the Sudanese bishops to continue its support for the Save the Saveable schools.

Today, the programme provides for 20,000 youngsters spread across 200 schools. They rely heavily on Aid to the Church in Need to help keep the schools open.

Teaching the Catechism is essential in a region dogged by extremism and intolerance, and where for the last quarter of a century the people have endured violence, poverty, persecution and displacement on a recordbreaking scale.

With your help, Aid to the Church in Need can continue to give Christian children in Sudan the dream of a brighter future.

Bishop Adwok told Aid to the Church in Need: “Thank you so much for your continued support of Save the Saveable.

“Please don’t forget that the endeavours of Aid to the Church in Need give so much hope for us all here.”
