Teaching the Faith

In many of the countries where Aid to the Church in Need works, priests rely on the help and dedication of their catechists to keep the Faith alive.

Aid to the Church in Need helps to train lay people to teach the Faith to Christians. They run religious education programmes for people of all ages, preparing them to enter the Church and to receive the sacraments, and helping them deepen their spirituality and understanding of the Faith.

We also provide essential catechetical materials such as bibles and catechisms.

Where priests are few, or have to serve vast parishes, the faithful may only see their priest once or twice a year. So catechists are vital to running the parish and looking after the spiritual needs of the people.

In countries like China and former Soviet states where atheist regimes have put strict controls on religious freedom, catechists play a key role in educating people about their Faith, sometimes at a risk to their own safety or freedom.

How can I help teach the Faith?

Please help us to support the work of these dedicated men and women as they teach the Faith. Even a small donation will make a big difference – just £5 will help us send up to four copies of our catechism I believe to Christians elsewhere in the world.

Teaching the Faith in Sudan

As a child, Rosa was crippled with polio. Today the only way she can get around is by crawling painfully on her hands and knees. She wears flip-flops on her hands to protect them from the burning heat of the African sand.

For 25 years she has been teaching the Catholic Faith to local women.

“I decided to serve God with the life He has given me. The catechist is the future and hope for the Church in Sudan,” she said.
